Tips for Hail Season
The majority of hailstorms in Texas occur from March through May, and with these storms can come extensive damage — just take a look at last April where some of us in the Brazos Valley area received baseball sized hail. Not only can this result in damage to your house, but also your vehicle. Here are some tips to help keep yourself and your belongings safe during potential hailstorms this season.
1. Keep your home and auto insurance up to date.
In the event damage does occur, this will help protect you from having to spend more money than necessary on any repairs.
2. Keep an emergency kit on hand at home.
While hailstorms don’t typically prevent you from leaving the home after they’re over, it’s important to be prepared in case of emergency. Keep a basic first aid kid, bottled water, and some imperishable foods. (We’re always a fan of a big jar of peanut butter.)
3. Listen to weather updates.
Knowing a hailstorm is likely in the near future will let you know when to act on the next tips.
4. Cover your vehicle.
Move your vehicles into a garage or covered parking spot (not under a tree.) If covered parking is not an option, consider investing in a hail/storm cover that you can put on before possible hail. However, a cheaper option is using old blankets. Take thick blankets laying around your house and throw them over vulnerable areas of your vehicle — windshield, roof/sunroof, hood, etc. You can tuck the corners into the doors to help keep them in place.
5. Stay home, inside with blinds/curtains closed during storm.
We know we all like to take a look at a storm as it unfolds, but this one is a no-brainer tip to stay safe, especially in the event of large sized hail.
6. After a storm, document any damage.
Once it is safe to go outside, take pictures of any damage that occurs to your property to have on record, in case your insurance needs it.
7. Choose local businesses for repairs!!!
There are companies that follow storms and come into town looking for your business. It’s so important to choose local businesses during this time to support your fellow community members that also endured the hailstorm and resulting damage. At ACME Glass, we can assess damage to your auto glass and see if you can get by with a chip repair or need a full replacement. We can replace any glass on your vehicle, even your sunroof.
